Health Guidelines for school attendance

Keeping a sick child home protects other children, school staff, and visiting community members from catching an illness that can be spread from person to person.

A sick child who is unable to participate at school should be kept home to rest and recover until symptoms improve. If a parent suspects that his or her child has a contagious disease, the parent should contact the school nurse so that other students who might have been exposed to the disease can be alerted.  Remember, hand washing can help prevent the spread of diseases.

When you take your child to a healthcare provider for an evaluation of illness or injury, please request a written letter stating when your child may return to school and any accommodations required upon his/her return.

Red Lick ISD is required to report certain contagious/communicable diseases to the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) or our local/regional health authority. For a complete list of Communicable Diseases, please see the Communicable Disease Chart for Schools from the Texas Department of State Health.

Health/medical information & emergency contacts

Parents/guardians should complete the health information forms each year (in the Ascender parent portal). This provides us with parent and alternate contact information and basic medical information in the event of a medical emergency at school or a school-related activity. Parents/guardians are urged to include information about pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, and medications, etc. on this form. The health form should be updated annually before the school year begins, and anytime there is a change to the emergency contacts or health information. Any changes in health for a student should be shared with the school nurse as quickly as possible, to help us keep your child safe at school.

Allergies and Anaphylaxis

While Red Lick ISD cannot guarantee an allergy-free environment at school, the district is committed to doing everything possible to ensure the safety of every child who has allergies. Red Lick ISD has guidelines to manage students with these life threatening allergies so that they may safely participate in the educational process. If your child has severe food or environmental allergies, it is important to share this with the school nurse each year. Parents of children with known anaphylaxis are expected to provide an allergy action plan, orders for medications, and an individual supply of emergency medication to the campus nurse each year. The school nurse will provide you with the required forms upon request.

SHAC

SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) information

A school health advisory council (SHAC) is a group of individuals who represent segments of the school and community. The advisory council acts collectively to provide advice to the school system on aspects of their school health programs. School systems often use advisory councils to provide advice to them on a variety of topics. It is important to emphasize that such councils are advisory in nature; formed to provide advice to school districts. These groups are not part of the administrative structure of the schools. They do not have any legal responsibilities within the school system.

The SHAC addresses all components of a comprehensive school health program (health instruction, healthful school environment, health services, physical education, school counseling, food service, school site health promotion for faculty and staff, and integrated school and community programs). It is also instrumental in: educational program planning, liaison between school and community, and development of health activities in the district (health promotion, health fairs).

SHAC membership can include parents, students, medical professionals, social service agencies, business/industry, volunteer health agencies, churches/synagogues, hospitals/clinics, public health agencies, civic and service organizations, colleges/universities, public media, attorneys and law enforcement officials, schools, youth groups, professional societies, and government officials.

If you are interested in participating in the Red Lick ISD School Health Advisory Council, please contact our nurse, Teresa Wright, at 903-838-8230, ext. 203
